Why Prop Bet Popularity Keeps Growing in the US, per Betzonic
Proposition bets, commonly known as prop bets, have evolved from a novelty sideline into one of the most commercially significant segments of the American sports betting market. Once confined largely to Super Bowl squares and informal office pools, prop wagering now accounts for a substantial and growing share of total handle at licensed sportsbooks across the country. Understanding why this category has expanded so rapidly requires looking at the intersection of regulatory change, technological capability, media culture, and the psychology of engagement that underpins modern sports consumption.
The Regulatory Foundation That Made Growth Possible
The single most consequential event in the history of American sports betting was the Supreme Court’s May 2018 ruling in Murphy v. National Collegiate Athletic Association, which effectively struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992. PASPA had confined legal sports wagering almost entirely to Nevada for over two decades. Once that barrier fell, states moved quickly to establish their own frameworks. New Jersey launched legal mobile betting within weeks of the ruling. By 2023, more than 35 states and the District of Columbia had enacted some form of legal sports betting legislation, creating a competitive commercial environment that operators needed to differentiate themselves within.
Prop bets became a primary tool for that differentiation. Traditional game-line wagering — spreads, moneylines, totals — is relatively uniform across books. Operators compete on margin and odds, but the product itself is similar. Player props and novelty props, by contrast, allow sportsbooks to offer hundreds of distinct markets for a single game. A single NFL Sunday can generate thousands of individual prop markets across all matchups, covering everything from passing yards and receiving touchdowns to whether a specific defensive player will record a sack in the first quarter. This depth of market creation gives operators a meaningful competitive advantage and keeps bettors on platform longer.
How Media Integration Accelerated Adoption
The rise of prop betting in the US did not happen in isolation from the broader sports media landscape. Fantasy sports, which grew dramatically through the 2000s and 2010s under the legal framework established by the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006, conditioned tens of millions of Americans to think about individual player performance rather than just team outcomes. When legal betting opened up, that audience was already primed for player-focused wagering. The cognitive leap from setting a fantasy lineup based on projected statistics to placing a prop bet on those same statistics was relatively small.
Broadcast media reinforced this further. Beginning around 2019 and accelerating through 2021 and 2022, major sports networks integrated betting odds and prop lines directly into pregame shows, halftime segments, and dedicated programming. ESPN’s partnership announcements, NBC Sports integrations, and the launch of dedicated betting-focused programming like “The Lines” on FS1 normalized the language of props for casual viewers. Analysts began discussing player prop lines the same way they discussed injury reports — as relevant context for understanding a game. This normalization effect is difficult to quantify precisely, but industry analysts at firms like Eilers & Krejcik Gaming have pointed to media integration as a material driver of new customer acquisition.
Betzonic has tracked this convergence closely, noting that the fastest-growing prop categories in recent years have been those most frequently discussed in mainstream sports media — quarterback passing yards, wide receiver receptions, and first-quarter scoring props that align with live broadcast narratives. Those interested in a deeper breakdown of how these markets are structured can visit Betzonic for analysis of how odds are set and where value tends to emerge across different prop categories.
The Technology Infrastructure Behind Modern Prop Markets
Offering thousands of prop markets per day at competitive odds is not operationally simple. It requires real-time data feeds, automated odds compilation, risk management systems capable of handling correlated parlays, and fraud detection infrastructure robust enough to catch sharp action on obscure markets before it damages book margins. The rapid buildout of this infrastructure between 2018 and 2023 was largely made possible by the entry of established European operators — DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, Caesars, and PointsBet among others — who brought existing technology stacks and supplier relationships into the US market.
Data providers like Sportradar and Stats Perform supply the underlying feeds that power automated prop generation. These companies ingest real-time tracking data from leagues — including the NFL’s Next Gen Stats system and the NBA’s Second Spectrum player tracking — and translate that data into tradeable markets within seconds of in-game events. This has been particularly important for the growth of live prop betting, which allows bettors to wager on player performance metrics as a game unfolds rather than only before it begins. Live betting as a share of total handle has grown from a relatively minor category in 2019 to representing, by some operator estimates, between 30 and 45 percent of total sports betting volume at major books by 2023.
The development of same-game parlays (SGPs) deserves specific mention here. SGPs allow bettors to combine multiple props from a single game into a single wager — for instance, linking a quarterback’s passing yards total with a wide receiver’s receiving yards and a team total. These products were introduced to the US market around 2019 and quickly became among the highest-margin products operators offer, because the correlation between legs in an SGP is complex enough that most recreational bettors underprice the risk. FanDuel’s SGP product was particularly aggressive in its early marketing, and competitors followed rapidly. The appeal to bettors is the potential for large payouts from small stakes; the appeal to operators is a hold percentage that typically exceeds standard single-game wagering by a significant margin.
Demographics, Engagement Patterns, and the Casual Bettor
Survey data collected by the American Gaming Association and independent research firms consistently shows that the demographic profile of the American sports bettor skews younger than traditional casino gamblers. Bettors aged 21 to 44 represent a disproportionate share of online sports betting activity, and this cohort has different engagement preferences than older casino demographics. They are more likely to wager on sports they are actively watching, more likely to use mobile devices exclusively, and more likely to treat betting as a social or entertainment activity rather than a primary gambling pursuit.
Prop bets fit this behavioral profile almost perfectly. They offer a way to maintain engagement throughout a broadcast even when the game itself is lopsided. A bettor who has placed a prop on a running back’s rushing yards has a reason to watch the fourth quarter of a blowout. This engagement extension is valuable both to bettors — who get more entertainment per dollar wagered — and to operators, who benefit from longer session times and higher reinvestment rates. Betzonic’s analysis of user behavior patterns among recreational bettors suggests that prop wagering correlates with significantly higher session frequency compared to straight-game wagering, which aligns with broader industry data on product stickiness.
The social dimension of prop betting also contributes to its growth. Platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit communities dedicated to sports betting have created informal markets for prop picks and analysis. This peer-to-peer information sharing drives awareness of specific prop markets and creates communities of practice around handicapping individual player performance. While professional sharp bettors have long focused on market inefficiencies in props — particularly early in the week when lines are less sharp — the democratization of statistical analysis tools has brought a wider audience into serious prop handicapping, further deepening the market’s cultural footprint.
The trajectory of prop betting in the US reflects a broader maturation of the legal sports wagering industry rather than a passing trend. As more states continue to legalize and regulate sports betting, as data infrastructure becomes more sophisticated, and as media and betting ecosystems become more deeply intertwined, the conditions that have driven prop market growth show no signs of reversing. What began as an entertaining supplement to traditional game-line wagering has become a structural pillar of how Americans engage with professional and collegiate sports — financially, analytically, and culturally.
